CSET Learning Instructors

Our Instructors…

Are all current or former classroom teachers who are committed to designing and facilitating learning experiences that reflect current theories on effective adult learning. Our online courses include multiple opportunities for sense-making. Activities such as modeling research-based practices and constructing opportunities to analyze, try out, and reflect on the new strategies are common and embedded in each course. This active learning approach supports teachers to transform their teaching and not just layer new strategies on top of the old.

Tawheedah Abdul

Tawheedah has ten years of experience in public and charter school settings, serving in several capacities— ELA instructor, department chair, instructional coach, equity training facilitator, and assistant principal. As an alumna of the Hollyhock program, Tawheedah leverages her professional experiences, research interests, and passion for social justice and educational equity through her role as Social Justice Implementation Director.

Kelly Boles

Kelly Boles is a Ph.D. candidate in Curriculum and Teacher Education: Mathematics as well as in Learning Sciences and Technology Design. Her research conceptualizes teachers as learners and investigates inequities in teacher learning opportunities, particularly as related to geographic disparities. In her research she leverages technology to support both student and teacher learning, particularly within STEM fields.

Christine Bywater

Christine Bywater is a Professional Development Associate, both in the areas of history education and educational technology. Her primary work focuses on supporting the integration of technology in engaging and equitable ways for students. She collaborates with local schools and teachers to support the use of technology in K-12 curriculum and teacher professional development.

Janet Carlson

Dr. Carlson’s research interests include the impact of educative curriculum materials and transformative professional development on science teaching and learning. She began her career as a middle and high school science teacher and has spent the last 20 years working in science education developing curriculum, leading professional development, and conducting research.

Alissa Fong

Alissa Fong serves as a Professional Development Associate and an Instructional Math Coach for the Hollyhock Fellowship Program. She is also on the Stanford Problem Solving Cycle project, which is a collaboration between CSET and San Francisco Unified School District that focuses on developing professional learning communities, deepening mathematical content knowledge, and exploring new pedagogical practices.

Preetha Menon

Dr. Preetha Menon is a lead researcher at CSET. Her work involves supporting students, educators, and administrators in the simultaneous development of language and content among traditionally underserved students with a focus on multilingual learners. She is currently involved in mixed-methods research efforts and producing a variety of resources and practices for schools and districts for content and language learning.

Tammy Moriarty

Dr. Moriarty’s work focuses on building the leadership capacity of teacher, school, and district leaders by facilitating professional learning sessions and providing leadership coaching. Her experience includes being a secondary science teacher, a district science resource teacher, school administrator, and educational consultant.

Michele was an English teacher, teacher leader, and literacy curriculum coordinator in California and Massachusetts for a decade prior to shifting her focus entirely to instructional coaching and designing and facilitating professional development for teams of coaches in San Jose, CA and Oakland, CA.

Rachel Zulick

Rachel Zulick started her journey with Hollyhock as a fellow of the inaugural cohort in 2014, and she hasn’t looked back! Currently, she serves as an Academic Program Professional with the Hollyhock Fellowship through CSET. During her 10 years in public education, Rachel has served communities at 5 schools across 4 states where she was a National Board certified middle and high school science teacher and an instructional coach.
